The artwork portrays a woman who lived in Paris—a courtesan adorned with a camellia flower whenever she was free. Created in the style of Art Nouveau, the piece captures the elegance and tragedy of her story.

This tale unfolds in 1845 in France, inspired by Marie Duplessis, the most celebrated courtesan of her time. She possessed not only striking beauty but also a sharp mind that captivated men. A bouquet of camellias always graced her wrist—no other flowers resonated with her. These simple yet exquisite blossoms became her signature, earning her the title "The Lady of the Camellias."

At that time, Paris was ravaged by tuberculosis, an incurable disease. At just 23, Marie succumbed to it, and her grave was covered in flowers by those who mourned her. Among them was Alexandre Dumas fils, who, deeply moved by her life, wrote the novel The Lady of the Camellias. The story later inspired Giuseppe Verdi to compose the opera La Traviata.

I read her story—and painted this piece.

How to Frame Your Artwork

Works on paper (drawings / prints on paper)

I ship works on paper unframed. Ready-made frames are easy to find (e.g., IKEA’s classic RIBBA). Most include a white mat (mount) that lets the artwork “breathe.”

  • Choose white or black frames/mats to suit your space.
  • Black mats usually need to be purchased separately.
  • You can echo a color from the piece (e.g., a subtle green frame) or pick an ornate wooden frame for a more classic/gothic interior.

Canvas paintings

Canvases are usually displayed without an outer frame—the edges are painted as a continuation of the image for a clean, contemporary look.

If you prefer a frame, choose an open (floater) frame: it mounts from behind and leaves a slim gap around the canvas, adding visual “air” without covering the composition.

Art prints

Many of my prints are offered already framed and marked on the product page as “Framed Print.” In that case, no extra framing is needed.

I also offer unframed prints at a lower price—perfect if you want to choose your own frame. For unframed options, standard ready-made frames (like IKEA RIBBA) work well; canvas prints pair beautifully with floater frames. Please check each listing’s details for size and finish.
