A Dialogue with Aubrey Beardsley

A Dialogue with Aubrey Beardsley

This collage continues a dialogue with Aubrey Beardsley’s drawings across more than a century. A female figure holding a raised whip, drawn in red ink, meets pages from an old Spanish-language book and a vintage photograph found at an antiques market in Barcelona.

The red line runs through the layers of the composition, bringing drawing, text, and photography together in one continuous gesture. Three candles heighten the intimacy of the scene, where elegance meets power, and desire meets play.

Together with its companion piece, this collage explores the gaze, the body, and relationships between people. More than a century has passed. The bodies have changed — but the game remains.

How to Frame Your Artwork

Works on paper (drawings / prints on paper)

I ship works on paper unframed. Ready-made frames are easy to find (e.g., IKEA’s classic RIBBA). Most include a white mat (mount) that lets the artwork “breathe.”

  • Choose white or black frames/mats to suit your space.
  • Black mats usually need to be purchased separately.
  • You can echo a color from the piece (e.g., a subtle green frame) or pick an ornate wooden frame for a more classic/gothic interior.

Canvas paintings

Canvases are usually displayed without an outer frame—the edges are painted as a continuation of the image for a clean, contemporary look.

If you prefer a frame, choose an open (floater) frame: it mounts from behind and leaves a slim gap around the canvas, adding visual “air” without covering the composition.

Art prints

Many of my prints are offered already framed and marked on the product page as “Framed Print.” In that case, no extra framing is needed.

I also offer unframed prints at a lower price—perfect if you want to choose your own frame. For unframed options, standard ready-made frames (like IKEA RIBBA) work well; canvas prints pair beautifully with floater frames. Please check each listing’s details for size and finish.
